Sirius in the mirror
by mneomosyne (mneomosyne)
at March 25th, 2007 (11:14 am)

I'm cleaning up some old files and I don't remember if I posted this one before.

Another note: I want to make a 'mnem' website with a nice and easy archive of all my fanart (over 600 pieces). which book should I start reading to learn how to make a website? Any handy tips?
(you might have guessed, I really don't know anything about websites.)

ETA I'm using mac computers, this probably matters when I try to figure things out.

What a lovely portrait!

I don't know how to put together a website either but what I do know is that you should be sure to find a webhost that is fanart/slash friendly. They aren't all. I believe Yukipon uses this webhost. http://www.populli.org/webhosting.shtml
You may want to ask her about that aspect of it. Good luck! :)

Angel Harry

Thank you, you've got a good point there, but I might make the site 'Gen' only and stay away from the slash.

I wouldn't recommend books (price, quickly outdated) and suggest ye good olde internet, from the selfhelphtml site to the many other free webdesign pages that cover anything from beginner stages to specialist tips (just because I never fixed my own doesn't mean these pages are no good :))

:) Thank you, I'll see what I can find, I was hoping to find out more during my long train travels. Would there be easy imac do-it-yourself websites you know about? (without 'right-click' instructions etc.)

Sadly not, but I hope someone else can link you up!

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter which type of computer you're using. The code one must use (be it HTML, CSS, PHP or whatever) to design a site is not dependent on that, hence the fact that there are no PC-only sites or Mac-only sites.

You can find pre-made designs just about everywhere but Open Source Web Design is a good place to start. This may also help you figure out what kind of design you want to have.

As for online tutorials, HTML code tutorial is good though, depending on what you wanna do, may not be necessary reading. W3 Schools has good tutorials as well.

Wow, thank you :D

I'll be studying those links closely. I really don't know a thing about this but now at least I know where to begin ♥ thanks again!

OHMYGOODNESS, where did you get that icon of Sirius? That's exactly what I picture him looking like at Hogwarts!

I was about to ask you if I could add a link to your LJ in my website, and which one you'd like to have linked.
(Can I? And if I can, which one?)

As for creating your own website;
How about Page Creator? http://pages.google.com/
It's a bit lame, but maybe easy to start, I guess.

Mmm I wish I could help you there, but it might be a bit troublesome when we are away from each other.

Anyway, let me know if you're interested; maybe I can help you something on Y!M. :)

Oh, and the art is beautiful. I hope Harry could see him through the mirror like that.

Sirius is so lovely and sad, and needs petting as much as Padfoot.

I don't have links for you, but I do use populli for my HP-related hosting, and I've had a good experience with it. Also, although I'm busy right now (packing, heh) and won't be around as much, I'd be happy to give you some help/tips on your site as it progresses -- my username is the same on Y!M, AIM, gmail and lj ;D

Aaaah it makes me so sad ;_;.
I'm writing a fiction where Sirius did not die, he communicates with Harry thanks to the mirror and when I wrote it I nearly cried ¬_¬;. *silly*

Oh! It's beautiful! :D

I don't know much about Macs or hosting art online, so I can't really help with the website question. Unless you're into usability, which means making sure people can find what they're looking for on your site, in which case I recommend http://www.useit.com/, but that's mostly for business websites. :)

Look in Finder for your Applications. One of your Applications should be iWeb, which is REALLY user friendly. From Apple.com you can look up tutorials in iWeb, such as this one:

With that many pieces of fanart, and more to come, surely, I would recommend that you check out some gallery software that you would just need to customize and install. Take a look at Coppermine and Gallery. I would also take a look at Nasubionna's webpage. She has had and been updating it forever, so it is another one that you can look at to inspire you.

Good luck! Let me know if I can be of any help!

I would love love love to see a mnem site. I love looking at your art for long hours at a time, and an easy archive would make it way easier for me to share it with other people! :D
